You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the value of x or y so that the line passing through the two points has the given slope. " The first problem is
(-3,y), (-9,-2); m = 1
:
Use the slope formula: %28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29 = m; where:
x1=-3; y1=y
x2=-9; y2=-2
m = 1
so we have:
%28-2-y%29%2F%28-9-%28-3%29%29 = 1
minus a minus is a plus
%28-2-y%29%2F%28-6%29 = 1
multiply both sides by -6
-2 - y = -6
get rid of all those negative mult by -1
2 + y = 6
y = 6 - 2
y = 4
:
:
Check this by using the point/slope form: y - y1 = m(x - x1)
y - 4 = 1(x - (-3))
y = x + 3 + 4
y = x + 7
confirm that this is true when x = -9
y = -9 + 7
y = -2
:
Check the slope using these values
m = %28-2-4%29%2F%28-9-%28-3%29%29
m = %28-6%29%2F%28-9%2B3%29
m = %28-6%29%2F%28-6%29
m = 1
