Question 731753: Hi. I have spent a lot of time on this. Hopefully someone here can help me. I have been given this formula:
1/2g=g(R^2)/((R+h)^2)
The objective is to make h the subject and express it in terms of R.
I have been informed that the answer is h=((sqrt2)-1)R
How do I get to this? Thanks in advance

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1/2g=g(R^2)/((R+h)^2)
The objective is to make h the subject and express it in terms of R.
-------------------
1/2g=g(R^2)/((R+h)^2)
1/2 = (R^2)/((R+h)^2)
Multiply by 2
1 = 2(R^2)/((R+h)^2)
Multiply by (R=h)^2
(R+h)^2 = 2R^2
R%5E2+%2B+2Rh+%2B+h%5E2+=+2R%5E2
-R%5E2+%2B+2Rh+%2B+h%5E2+=+0
h%5E2+%2B+2Rh+-+R%5E2+=+0

h+=+%28sqrt%282%29+-+1%29%2AR
*** Using both + and -sqrt(2)
