I think you may mean 2y+y-3=4(y-5)...no (y-3) needed


Multiply out the parentheses:
2y+y-3=4y-20


Combine like terms:
3y-3=4y-20


Subtract 3y on each side:
-3=y-20


Add 20 to each side:
17=y
