Question 70421: Solve: 5(x-2)^2 = 3
The answers are multiple choice:
a)10 plus,minus sqrt3
-----------------
5
b)plus minus 59/25
c) 1/5, 19/5
d)10 plus, minus sqrt15
--------------------
5
I think the answers have thrown me off on trying to figure this out. I am not sure how sqrt play a role in this, can you help me? Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve: 5(x-2)^2 = 3
:
Divide both sides by 5:
(x-2)^2 = 3/5
:
Find the square root of both sides:
x - 2 = +/-Sqrt(3/5)
:
x = 2 +/-Sqrt(3/5)
:
This does not exactly agree with any of your answers unless you do this:
x = 2 +/-Sqrt(15/25); change the fraction from 3/5 to 15/25
:
x = 2 +/-(1/5)Sqrt(15); extract the sqrt of 1/25
:
x = 10/5 +/-(1/5)Sqrt(15); multiply 2 by 10 so you can put 5 under it
:
Then you can write it:
x = %2810+%2B-Sqrt%2815%29%29%2F5 which is the same value as 2+/-Sqrt(3/5)
:
Not sure why they do this, it confuses things and makes more chance for error
