Question 695975: Hi,
My Son as these two equations that we can not get the right answers needed. Both of them have to do with finding the center point and then plot them to a graph. We would be sure glad if one of you could give us a helping hand and see our mistakes.
The first one is X^2 + Y^2 - 20X + 24Y + 100 = 0
Our work is this X2 + Y2 - 20X + 24Y = - 100
X2 - 20X + Y2 + 24y = - 100
Y2 + 24Y = 0
(X - 10)2 + (Y + 12)2 + 144 = 100
(X - 10)2 + (Y + 12)2 = + 144
center is (10, -12) on the graph
The next one is X^2 + Y^2 + 8X - 16Y - 20 = 0
Again our work X2 + 8X + Y2 - 16Y - 20
(X + 4)2 + (Y - 8)2 = 160
center is (-4, 8) on the graph
Half a change if one of them are right We have no idea?
Thanks for your help
Kevin
Everything is correct except for the constant term in your second equation. Should be 20 from the original constant plus 16 from completing the square on x plus 64 from completing the square on y for a total of 100. Hence your radius for the second equation is 10.
