You can put this solution on YOUR website!

I need help solving this equation and checking the solution.
9x+1=8x+4
Do I add 9x and 8x together then 1 and 4, not sure?

9x + 1 = 8x + 4

Since the variables are on different sides, we need to get both on the same side. We can therefore choose to get rid of the variable on the right-side by subtracting 8x. When 8x is subtracted from the left side, it leaves 0 + 4 on the right side, and the left-side becomes 9x - 8x + 1.

Likewise, you subtract 1 from the left-side in order to get rid of the 1. Now we have:

9x - 8x + 1 - 1 = 8x - 8x + 4 - 1

You can now substitute 3 for x in the original equation to determine if that solution makes the equation true, and it does, as seen below.

9(3) + 1 = 8(3) + 4
27 + 1 = 24 + 4
28 = 28 (TRUE)
