Do the opposite of whatever is being done to the variable. For example, if it's:
x+5=10
Subtract 5 from both sides. If it were x-5=10 then add 5 to both sides for x=15.


If x is multiplied by something, divide both sides by it. 5x=10 gives x=2.


If x is divided by something, multiply both sides by it. x/5=10 gives x=20.

If you're trying to solve for x, do whatever operation is necessary to isolate x.

Note the phrase "one-step equation," should only take one step to solve, as opposed to computer algorithms which may take hundreds of steps.
