Question 544844: Jamie can solve 2 equations in a minute. Mackey can solve 3 equations in a minute. Jamie starts working at 10 A.M. and Mackey starts working at noon. What time will Mackey have solved as many problems as Jamie? Found 2 solutions by ankor@dixie-net.com, josmiceli:Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Jamie can solve 2 equations in a minute. Mackey can solve 3 equations in a minute.
Jamie starts working at 10 A.M. and Mackey starts working at noon.
What time will Mackey have solved as many problems as Jamie?
:
Let m = no. of minutes worked by Mackey (who started at noon)
then
(m + 120) = no. of minutes worked by Jamie
:
3m = 2(m + 120)
3m = 2m + 240
3m - 2m = 240
m = 240 minutes which is 4 hrs
:
They will have worked the same number equations at 4 PM
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The key is to find out how many equations Jamie
solves before Mackey starts solving
--------
Jamie's rate of solving is ( 2 equations) / ( 1 minute )
Mackey's rate of solving is ( 3 equations / 1 minute )
--------
Jamie's head start is:
( rate ) x ( time ) = ( there are 120 minutes in 2 hrs ) equations
--------
Let = number of problems that mackey solves
until they both solve the same number of equations
Let = time until they both have solved the
same number of equations
--------
Start a stopwatch when Mackey starts solving
Jamie's equation:
(1)
Mackey's equation:
(2)
--------
Substitute )2) into (1)
(1)
(1) minutes hours
They will both have solved the same number of
equations at noon + 4 hrs, or 4 PM
