You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First change the mixed fractions to improper fractions:
5 5%2F8+div by 5 5%2F14

To do this multiply the denominator times the whole number and add the numerator. Place over the denominator.

For the first fraction, multiply 8 times 5 and add 5: 45%2F8
For the second fraction, multiply 14 times 5 and add 5: 75%2F14

That would be
45%2F8 div by 75%2F14

When you divide, you invert the second number and multiply:
45%2F8*14%2F75

Next you can divide out ANY factor of ANY numerator with ANY factor of ANY denominator. In this case you can divide out a 15 and a 2 factor from numerator and denominator. Our webmaster Ichudov has some great ways to show this, but alas, I haven't learned it yet.

This is what you end up with:
When you divide 45 by 15 you get 3.
When you divide 75 by 15 you get 5.
When you divide 14 by 2 you get 7.
When you divide 8 by 2 you get 4:
45%2F8*14%2F75
3%2F4*7%2F5

Multiply numerator times numerator and denominator times denominator:
3%2F4*7%2F5= 21%2F20 or 1 1%2F10
