Question 534545: Solve 3x+6>5
Answer by KMST(5328) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There was once a number x
That number was multiplied times 3
After that, to the product they added the number 6
We know something about the result, but we want to go back to x
We need to undo what was done to x
undoing each operation in the reverse order than they were done.
So the result of all that is more than 5%7D%7D%0D%0A%7B%7B%7B3x%2B6%3E5
Before they added the 6 it was
3x%2B6-6%3E5-6 or 3x%3E-1
And before that, before they multiplied by 3 it was
3x%2F3%3E-1%2F3 or x%3E-1%2F3
Positive and negative numbers can be put on a number line, just like positive and negative numbers for temperature are on the scale of the outdoor thermometer on my back patio.

x%3E-1%2F3 means that x is not -1%2F3
but it could be any number greater than that, meaning any number on the number line to the right of -1%2F3
It is often represented by coloring the portion of the number line to the right of -1%2F3
and drawing a circle around -1%2F3
like this:

If the result had been x%3E=-0.3 x=-1%2F3
would also be a solution, and that would be indicated by coloring in the circle.
