Question 5249: How do you solve this problem? Its been a while since I've taken any math and I have to take the pre-test for college. I can't find any examples in the pre GED book to help me figure them out. Any help would be appreciated.

1) Which of the following expressions represents the product of 3 less than twice x and 2 more than the quantity 3 times x?
2) If x=-1 and y=2, what is the value of the expression 2x3 (the 3 is small and above the x) -3xy?
3) For all x, 12x2-40x-32=?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. %282x-3%29%283x%2B2%29

2. 2x%5E3+-+3xy --> 2%28-1%29%5E3+-+3%28-1%29%282%29
--> 2(-1) + 6
--> -2 + 6
--> 4

3. 12x%5E2-40x-32=?.

dy/dx = 24x-40
24x-40 = 0
24x = 40
x = 40/24
x = 5/3

--> y = 12(5/3)^2 - 40(5/3) - 32
so y = 12*25/9 - 200/3 - 32
y = -65 and 1/3
ie y = -196/3

So, IF you mean, what y values do you get from this function, then the answer is y>= -196/3
