You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Assume the problem is:
1%2F12 - %28%28x-1%29%29%2F12 = -1%2F4
multiply by the common denominator
12*1%2F12 - 12*%28%28x-1%29%29%2F12 = 12*-1%2F4
Cancel the denominators
1 - (x-1) = -3
Removing the bracket changes the signs to:
1 - x + 1 = -3
-x + 1 + 1 = -3
-x + 2 = -3
subtract 2 from both sides
-x = -3 -2
-x = -5
multiply both sides by -1
x = 5

See if that flies in the original equation
1%2F12 - %28%285-1%29%29%2F12 = -1%2F4
1%2F12 - 4%2F12 = -3%2F12
