Question 450333: What am I doing wrong?
-5x-2[2x-4(x+7)]-6
Here is my work down.

-5x-2[2x-4(x+7)]-6
-5x-2[2x-4x+28]-6
-5x-4x-8x+56-6
-17x+50. I know that answer is wrong. But, why is the -8x not needed? Don't you distribute?
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-5x-2[2x-4(x+7)]-6
-5x-2[2x-4x+28]-6
made a mistake here
-28 not plus
-5x-2[2x-4x-28]-6
-5x-2[-2x-28]-6
-5x+4x+56-6
-1x+50
50-1x
simplified it is
50-x

-5x-2[2x-4x+28]-6
-5x-4x-8x+56-6
as for the 8x you made a mistake there too.
I added the 2x and the -4x to get -2x which gets multiplied by -2 and becomes +4x
let's say we did it your way.
-2*2x=-4x
-2*-4x=+8x
-4x+8x=4x

yes, but you are not distributing the signs correctly

-5x-2[2x-4(x+7)]-6

-5x-2[2x-4x-28]-6

-5x-4x+8x+56-6

-x + 50

-5x-2%282x-4%28x%2B7%29%29-6
-5x-2%282x-4x-28%29-6....here was your mistake..it should be -28 because
you multiplying 7 by -4
-5x-4x%2B8x%2B56-6 .....same as above...be careful with signs
-9x%2B8x%2B50
-9x%2B50
