(9X + 8y)/ 12

The 12 is a common denominator:
[9x/12]+[8y/12]

= [3x/4] + [2y/3]

Almost, but not quite...

We have %289x+%2B+8y%29%2F12. Splitting up the fraction, this becomes

9x%2F12+%2B+8y%2F12, which is equal to 3x%2F4+%2B+2x%2F3.
