x= -4
7x-3x=1-17
4x=-16
x=-16/4
x=-4

Subtract 1 from both sides
3x = 7x + 16
Subtract 3x from both sides
0 = 4x + 16
Subtract 16 from both sides
-16 = 4x
Divide by 4
x = -4

Subtract 17 from both sides
3x - 16 = 7x
