Question 321960: Please help me solve this problem and explain the solution:
-6y - 1 = 2

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

-6y - 1 = 2

Add + 1 to both sides:

-6y - 1 = 2
    + 1 +1
-6y = 3

Divide both sides by -6, the coefficient of y:

-6y - 1 = 2
    + 1 +1
-6y = 3
%28-6y%29%2F%28-6%29 %22=%223%2F%28-6%29

Cancel the -6's on the left. The right is
a positive 3 divided by a negative 6 which
gives a negative result:

-6y - 1 = 2
    + 1 +1
-6y = 3
%28-6y%29%2F%28-6%29 %22=%223%2F%28-6%29
%28cross%28-6%29y%29%2F%28cross%28-6%29%29 %22=%22-3%2F6

Now we reduce the fraction -3%2F6 to -1%2F2

-6y - 1 = 2
    + 1 +1
-6y = 3
%28-6y%29%2F%28-6%29 %22=%223%2F%28-6%29
%28cross%28-6%29y%29%2F%28cross%28-6%29%29 %22=%22-3%2F6
y%22=%22-1%2F2

To check it:

-6y+-+1+=+2
-6%28-1%2F2%29-1=2
3-1=2
2=2

So it's correct.
