+7y+%2B+1+=+9+%2B+3y+ sub 3y and 1 from both sides
+-3y+-+1+=+-3y+-+1+
+4y+=+8+ divide by 4 on both sides
+y+=+2+
Dead on!

so you subtract 3y and 1 from both sides of the equation
4y=8
divide both sides by 4
y=2
you were right on!!!
