You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You say this is word problem but you didn't list it as one.
3x+3(x+10)=270
3(2x+10)=270
2x+10=90
2*(x+5)=90
x+5=45
x=40 kph
check
3*40+3*50=270
120+150=270
ok

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I they are traveling in opposite directions
you can add their speeds and consider one
to be stationary and the other moving
Let s = speed of the slower one
270+=+%28s+%2B+s+%2B+10%29%2A3 km
270+=+%282s+%2B+10%29%2A3
270+=+6s+%2B+30
6s+=+240
s+=+40
s+%2B+10+=+50
The slower boat's speed is 40 km/hr
check:
slower boat:
d%5Bs%5D+=+40%2A3
d%5Bs%5D+=+120 km
faster boat:
d%5Bf%5D+=+50%2A3
d%5Bf%5D+=+150
120+%2B+150+=+270
OK
