You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First express what you want to end up with in words
(pounds of protein in final mixture)/(total pounds of mixture) = 7%
Let s = pounds of soybean meal needed
Let c = pounds of cornmeal needed
given:
.12s = pounds of protein from soybean meal
.06c = pounds of protein from cornmeal
(1) s+%2B+c+=+240 pounds
------------------------
%28.12s+%2B+.06c%29%2F%28s+%2B+c%29+=+.07
%28.12s+%2B+.06c%29%2F240+=+.07
.12s+%2B+.06c+=+16.8
(2) 12s+%2B+6c+=+1680
Multiply both sides of (1) by 6
and subtract from (2)
(2) 12s+%2B+6c+=+1680
(1) -6s+-+6c+=+-1440
6s+=+240
s+=+40
And, from (1)
40+%2B+c+=+240
c+=+240+-+40
c+=+200
40 pounds of soybean meal and 200 pounds of cornmeal are needed
check answer:
%28.12s+%2B+.06c%29%2F%28s+%2B+c%29+=+.07
%28.12%2A40+%2B+.06%2A200%29%2F%2840++%2B+200%29+=+.07
%284.8+%2B+12%29%2F240+=+.07
16.8%2F240+=+.07
16.8+=+16.8
OK
