In this case, you do not have to set = 0.
step 1 - divide both sides by 4 to get
x%5E2+=+18%2F4
step 2 - take sqrt of both sides to get
x+=+sqrt%2818%29+%2F+2 or x+=+-sqrt%2818%29+%2F+2
which simplifies to
x+=+%2B3sqrt%282%29+%2F+2 or x+=+-3sqrt%282%29+%2F+2
