Solve using the addition principle:

a+-+5+=+4

Step 1. Add 5 to both sides of the equation to get numbers on one side only and variables on the other side.

a-5%2B5=4%2B5

a=9

Step 2. Check solution with the original equation a+-+5+=+4

9-5=4

Step 3. ANSWER: Solution is a=9.
