You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-5(2y+3)- 5 = -4(y+8) + 2
:
Do what is necessary to get the variable (y) on one side by itself
Usually on the left, but doesn't have to be
:
Multiply what inside the brackets (distribute)
-10y - 15 - 5 = -4y - 32 + 2
:
do the math
-10y - 20 = -4y - 30
:
Add 4y to both sides
-10y + 4y - 20 = -30
;
add 20 to both sides
-10y + 4y = -30 + 20
;
combine like terms
-6y = -10
:
The variable (y) has to be positive, multiply both sides by -1
6y = 10
;
Divide both sides by 6
y = 10%2F6
y = 5%2F3
:
:
Check the solution by replacing y with 5/3 in the original equation
