We are solving for y.
Combine like terms on both sides of the equation. Don't forgtet to change the signs when crossing the equal symbol.
In other words, 11y becomes -11y and -3 become 3.
8y - 11y = 3 + 9
-3y = 12
y = 12/-3
y = -4
NOTE: To solve for a variable, ANY variable, means to put it alone on one side of the equation.
This is exactly what I did with y. See how it's all alone? This is called solving for y. Of course, the same applies to ANY variable.
