Hello there,
This is a pretty simple equation:
Simplifying
x + y = 4
Solving
x + y = 4
Solving for variable 'x'.
Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.
Add '-1y' to each side of the equation.
x + y + -1y = 4 + -1y
Combine like terms: y + -1y = 0
x + 0 = 4 + -1y
x = 4 + -1y
Simplifying
x = 4 + -1y

Now for x + y = -1

Simplifying
x + y = -4
Solving
x + y = -4
Solving for variable 'x'.
Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.
Add '-1y' to each side of the equation.
x + y + -1y = -4 + -1y
Combine like terms: y + -1y = 0
x + 0 = -4 + -1y
x = -4 + -1y
Simplifying
x = -4 + -1y
Then you would graph these two answers and draw a line to each one. The point where the lines connect should be you answer.
I hope this helps! good luck on your lesson or homework!!!
