Question 203681: The line y=0.15x+0.7
represents an estimate of the average cost of gasoline for each year. The line
0.11x-y= -0.85
estimates the price of gasoline in January of each year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006).
a) Do you expect the lines to be intersecting, parallel, or perpendicular? Explain your reasoning.
b) Use the equations of the lines to determine if they are parallel. What did you find?
c) Did your answer to part b confirm your expectation in part a?
Answer by RAY100(1637) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! a)we see that the total price is the sum of a fixed cost and a variable cost(x term). the fixed numbers are similar(.7 and .85) and the variable coefficient is also close ( .15 and .11)
We would not expect these to be perpendicular. Very special case.
They might be parallel or even coincident, but again rare
They probably are intersecting lines, that are quite similar.

.
b)one eqn is y=.15x+.7 the other is y=.11 +.85
.
These are not parallel (equal) nor perpendicular (negative reciprocals)
.
c) yes
.
d) intersect at ( 3.75, 1.2625)
