Find -48 on the number line. Now pick a number on either side of -48, such as -49. Substitute your choice in place of the variable in your inequality. If you have a true statement, then the arrow points in the direction of the number you picked. If you have a false statement, it points the other way. Hint, -49 is smaller than -48.
