Question 14598: hi can you please help me solve this equation.
it says use the rule y= 3x cubed - 10 to complete the table. i know that one of your tutors already solved this for me but i accidently put squared instead of cubed and my computer wont let me write back to that tutor.
then it has
x y
2
1
0
10
5
y is left blank because i have to fill it out.
i have already tried some of these and for the answers i got
2/206
1/17
0/ -10
im not sure if they are right.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
What you have is y=3x%5E3+-10
What this means is: the value of y is equal to three times the value of x cubed, which is x times x times x, less the value 10.
If x = 1, for example, you multiply 1 three times (1 x 1 x 1 = 1), then multiply that value by 3 (3 x 1 = 3), then subtract 10 from that value (3 - 10 = -7). So, y=-7 when x=1.
The order of operations, when there are no parentheses used to indicate a change in this order, is do all powers and roots, then all multiplication and division (left to right), and then all addition and subtraction. This case has power first (cubing x), multiplication (3 times that), and subtraction (- 10).
Try it for x=2: 2 cubed is 8 [do you see why?], 8 times 3 is 24 [last time I looked], and 24 - 10 is 14. So y=14 when x=2.
Now do the rest!
NOTE: If the problem presenter had wanted you to multiply the value of x by 3 FIRST, and then do the cubing it would have been written as follows: %283x%29%5E3+-10
