Question 126972: If Joe makes $3.00 more in Overtime than regular time and if he were to work 5 hours straight time and 4 hours overtime what would be the straight time amount. The total he earned was $66.00.
I figured out that $6.00 was the straight time amount, but I can't figure out how to make an equation out of this? Can you help make an equation out of the word problem?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If I read it right, his overtime rate
is $3 more than his regular rate
Let his regular rate = r
Let his overtime rate = s
s+=+r+%2B+3
5r+%2B+4s+=+66
5r+%2B+4%28r+%2B+3%29+=+66
5r+%2B+4r+%2B+12+=+66
9r+=+54
r+=+6
His regular rate is $6 /hr
check answer
s+=+r+%2B+3
5r+%2B+4s+=+66
s+=+6+%2B+3
s+=+9
5%2A6+%2B+4%2A9+=+66
30+%2B+36+=+66
66+=+66
OK
