y represents the length of the second
z represents the length of the third
so x+y+z=48
the second piece is twice as long as the first then y=2x
the third piece in 3 times as long as the first then z=3x
then x+2x+3x=48 so 6x=48 so x=8
1st=x=8
2nd=y=16
3rd=z=24
