5x cm, 4y cm and (x + y +a) cm are lengths of the sides of an cross%28aquilateral%29 equilateral triangle
given in terms of x and y. Find x and y
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since the triangle is equilateral, we have these equations
    5x = 4y            (1)
and
    5x = x + y + a,    (2)
The last equation is equivalent to
    4x = y + a         (3)
From equation (1), we have  y = %285%2F4%29x = 1.25x.
Substituting it into equation (3), we get
    4x = 1.25x + a
     2.75x = a
         x =  a%2F2.75 = a%2F%28%2811%2F4%29%29 = %284a%29%2F11.
Then from y = 1.25x,  we have  y = 1.25%2A%28%284a%29%2F11%29 = %285a%29%2F11.
ANSWER.   x = %284a%29%2F11;  y = %285a%29%2F11.
Solved.
