Let x be the number of matches in each box.

He had two boxes, so the number of matches he had was 2x.

He used 5 matches, so the number he has left is 2x-5.

The number of matches he has left is 75:

2x-5=75
2x=75%2B5=80
x+=+2x%2F2+=+80%2F2+=+40

ANSWER: 40 matches in each box

.

Add the two numbers, 5 and 75; then divide the sum by 2.

It is a kindergarten level of complexity problem.
