You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Multiply first equation by 1%2F2.

system%28-3x-y=5%2C3x%2B2y=8%29
Simpler system, and at least allows for eliminating x to quickly solve for y.

Either you want to use Substitution Method, or Elimination Method.
If you did not learn Elimination Method, then:

-3x-y=5
-y=5%2B3x
y=-3x-5
Sustitute into other equation.
3x%2B2%28-3x-5%29=8
3x-6x-10=8
-3x-10=8
-3x=18
highlight%28x=-6%29
Substitute this into either equation.
y=-3x-5
y=-3%2A%28-6%29-5
y=18-5
highlight%28y=13%29

add them since the y values are additive inverses.
-3x=18
x=-6
y=13

Why "on earth" would someone advise another to change any of the above equations when all that needs to be done, INSTANTANEOUSLY, is the addition of the equations in order to ELIMINATE "y."
That's so RIDICULOUS!! And these people claim to be "tutors"?
Is it that difficult to see that adding the equations produces: - 3x = 18? How much easier can this thing get?
