I'm sorry you were given the problem in this form. Presumably it came from an educator; you would think an educator would know how to speak/write English.
The intent of the problem is to have you determine if a numerical value for the given expression can be found knowing...
A) (1) only
B) (2) only
C) (1) and (2)
D) (either) (1) or (2) alone
E) none of the above
Certainly (1) alone is not enough -- you still know nothing about x or z. So answers A and D are both not right.
With (2) alone, you can get x and z in terms of y to get an expression in y alone:
But to get a value for the expression, you need a value for y. So you need both (1) and (2) to find a value for the expression.
