You could read the word "to" as "over" ... so the problem could be interpreted as:

5 is over 8 as 15 is over 24
.
Then put 5 over 8 and set it equal to 15 over 24 ... just as you did to get:

Notice that in your answer ... if you multiplied the numerator 5 by 3 and its denominator 8
also by 3 the left hand side of the proportion is the same as the right hand side ... that is
you have:
