The problem is merely a substitution problem. You see, it says x = -3%2F8, right? and on #28, it says y - x. So you'll change that x into -3%2F8 instead, and same with y which equals 7%2F12.

After substituting, the problem should be: 7%2F12 - -3%2F8. i'm hoping you know full well that when two negative signs are together, then it changes to positive, which is: 7%2F12 + 3%2F8. And after that, just add, which the answer is: 23%2F24.
