n^2 - 10n + __ = -12 + 11
n^2 - 10n + __ = -1
Complete the square, half the coefficient of n squared, add to both sides
n^2 - 10n + 25 = -1 + 25
n^2 - 10n + 25 = 24
(n - 5)^2 = 24
find the square root of both sides
n - 5 = +/-sqrt%2824%29
add 5 to both sides, simplify the radical
n = 5 + 2sqrt%286%29
and
n = 5 - 2sqrt%286%29
