Sixteen+equals+the+number+of+tennis+shoes+decreased+by+3.
if +the+number+of+tennis+shoesis x then we have:

16+=+x+-+3

Let t=# of tennis shoes

So if 16 is (ie equals) the number of shoes t decreased by 3, then we have the equation

16=t-3


16%2B3=t%2Bcross%28-3%2B3%29 Add 3 to both sides


19=t Combine like terms


So there are 19 tennis shoes
