Question 1063738: Hello,
I have a close friend who is 16 and in 10th grade. He is very good at getting the answer to the equation, but due to Common Core, he has great trouble justifying or explaining how he got to the answer. While he can get to the answer in no time, his report card grade suffers greatly because he can't explain it.
He is more then frustrated. He has asked me to tutor him to help him get his grade up, but not I, nor his parents or grandparents can help him here because none of us were taught using Common Core. Is their a way, whether through printable example or something out there he can use at home to practice with?
Please reply,
Thanks, Brandon

You can put this solution on YOUR website! What is your friend studying? Algebra? Introductory Algebra? Intermediate Algebra? You could supplement using older textbooks from within the last 30 or 40 years, since many of them are still good. Basic Algebra does not change from year to year.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
Hello,
There are three textbooks in this site on Algebra-I, Algebra-II and Geometry.
They are free of charge and very well structured and ordered.
The links are
- ALGEBRA-I - YOUR ONLINE TEXTBOOK.
- ALGEBRA-II - YOUR ONLINE TEXTBOOK.
- GEOMETRY - YOUR ONLINE TEXTBOOK
(again,
https://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/quadratic/lessons/ALGEBRA-I-YOUR-ONLINE-TEXTBOOK.lesson
https://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/complex/ALGEBRA-II-YOUR-ONLINE-TEXTBOOK.lesson
https://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/Triangles/GEOMETRY-your-online-textbook.lesson )
Why do not try to look in these links, in the Tables of Contents and to look in some lessons by his choice to learn on
how to formulate math problems, how to solve them and how to present the solutions ?
Also, if he/she and you approve it, I could recommend him/her some books (~ textbooks) in Math for reading.
Next recommendation: he can look in this forum and to read the solutions our tutors write here.
Personally, I am a moderate person, but I can recommend him to read and to follow my solutions, since I often try to give detailed explanations.
There are also other tutors to read their solutions from. The first of them is Edwin.
Comment from student: Hello, Ok, so by "present the solution", do you mean, able to write out why he believes its the correct answer?
Like let me use this very simple equation: 2x +3 =11. Now i know x=4, but i don't know how to explain it by writing out how i got to said answer.
You understand what i mean?
My responce: regarding your question, read the lesson in this site:
- HOW TO solve a linear equation
The word forum in this my post is NOT the link. It is underlined to highlight the word.
