Mrs. Atkins pays 1800 for a new refrigerator, washer, and dryer. The refrigerator costs 250 more than the washer. The dryer costs half as much as the washer. How much does does the washer cost?
-----
Equations:
r + w + d = 1800
r = w+250
d = (w/2)
-------
Substitute for "r" and for "d", and solve for "w"::
(w+25) + w + (w/2) = 1800
2.5w + 25 = 1800
2.5w = 1775
w = $710 (cost of the washer)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
washer=x
Refrigerator=x+250
dryer=0.5x
-----------------
x+(x+250)+0.5x=1800
2.5x=1800-250
x=1550/2.5
x=620
x+250=870
0.5x=310

Mrs. Atkins pays 1800 for a new refrigerator, washer, and dryer. The refrigerator costs 250 more than the washer. The dryer costs half as much as the washer. How much does does the washer cost?
Let price of washer be W
Then price of refrigerator = W + 250 (Refrigerator costs $250 more than the washer)
Also, cost of the dryer is: %281%2F2%29+%2A+W, or .5W (Dryer costs 1%2F2 , or .5 of the price of the washer)
Since all cost a total of $1,800, then we get:
W+%2B+W+%2B+250+%2B+.5W+=+1800
W+%2B+W+%2B+.5W+%2B+250+=+1800
2.5W+=+1800+-+250
2.5W+=+1550
W, or cost of washer = 1550%2F2.5, or highlight_green%28%22%24%22620%29
