What if you tried to check the number as a product of 9 or multiple of 9? You would sum the digits and find 19, which is 18+1. If the sum were 18, you would say because 18 is a multiple of 9, that 16246 were a multiple of 9; but instead, the sum were too big by 1. A good guess it that the remainder of 16246/9 is 1.

16246%2F9=1805.11111111....
which shows that remainder of 1%2F9 after the decimal point.

Dividing by 9
Add up all the digits in the number.
Find out what the sum is. If the sum is divisible by 9, so is the number.

1%2B6%2B2%2B4%2B6=19 => 19 is not divisible by 9; means there is a reminder
we can write 19 as a sum of 18 and 1,
since 18 is divisible by 9, means 1 is reminder
so, 16246%2F9=1805+%2B1%2F9
