Question 3015: I need step by step instructions on how to factor numbers and examples also.
Answer by BestTutorEver(3) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! What type of number are you looking to factor? Whatever it is, it's basically just a guess and check type strategy. For example, 10. The factors would be 1, 2, 5, and 10. (Those are just in numerical order, but they are 5 X 2 and 1 X 10). As for equations, try the F.O.I.L. method.
1x^2+3x+10=0
This means that you take the first number (1x^2) and split it up to 1x and 1x (you get it? 1x^2 is the same as 1x multiplied by 1x!) Now, you add/subtract factors of the last number that will equal the middle term. For example (take the factors of 10... 5 and 2. 5-2 equals 3 (the middle term, which is why you would choose these instead of 10 and 1)
Thus, this equation factored would be (1x-2)(1x+5). Further simplified, it would be 2 and 5 (the opposite sign of whatever is inside!) Re-submit if you still do not understand.
