Question 29290: how do you round 150,983 to the nearest ten-thousand?
Answer by longjonsilver(2297) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! well, visually, lets write down a few numbers written to the nearest 10 thousand:
90,000
100,000
110,000
120,000
130,000
140,000
150,000
160,000
170,000
etc
So, which of these is 150,983 closest to?...answer is 150,000.
How to do it "properly"?
well, ten thousand means the number after the 1 here, so the answer is going to be 150,000 or 160,000.
We need to look at the number after the 5 and depending upon that, we either leave the 5 alone or we round up to 160,000.
The number is a zero...so we leave the 5 alone --> answer is 150,000
eg, what about 157,348?
Here we have a 7... so that means the number is closer to 160,000 than it is to 150,000, so we round the number up to 160,000 in this case
