Hi,
Let x represent cost of Algebra book and y the cost of a geometry book
Question States:
x + 3y = 83 0r x+=+83+-+3y
3x + 2y = 95
3(83-3y) + 2y = 95
249-95 = 7y
154 = 7y
y = $22, cost of geometry book, Algebra book is $17 83-3%2A22
CHECKING our answer***
3x + 2y = 95
51 + 44 = 95

Ask John how much he paid for each book.
John should also be able to solve this problem using algebra since he bought 4 algebra books.
1a+3g=83
3a+2g=95
3a+9g=83*3

3a+9g=249
3a+2g=95
7g=154
g=22
a+66=83
a=17
check
51+44=95
ok
