Question 429620: Alberrt Pujols is on a hitting streak. In the last four games he has hit 8 homeruns. some were sole homeruns and some were 3-run homeruns. if there were a total of 14 runs scored off of his hits, how many were solo ad how many were 3-run homers? And how do you find the answer?
Thanks
I have tried trying to make equations I know one should be x+y=14
and let x= sole homeruns and let y=3-runhomers but I cant seem to figure it out

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x = the number of solo HR's
The total number of HR's hit = 8
The number of 3-run HR's will then be 8 - x
The total number of runs = 14
So we can write
x + 3(8 - x) = 14
Solving for x gives:
x + 24 - 3x = 14 -> -2x = -10 -> x = 5
So the number of solo HR's = 5, and the number of 3-run HR's = 8 - 5 = 3
Ans: 5 solo's, 3 3-run HR's
Check: 5 + 3*3 = 5 + 9 = 14 total runs
