Question 412142: I need some help with this please!: A local pizzeria sells a small pizza with one topping for $6 and a small pizza with three toppings for $8. What is the charge for a PLAIN small pizza? What is the charge for each topping? Use a system of equations to model each situation. Solve by using any method (substitution, elimination).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
They are asking "What is the price per topping?"
Let x = the price / topping
Let y = cost of the pizza without a topping
given:
1 topping costs 1%2Ax
3 toppings cost 3x
(1) y+%2B+x+=+6
(2) y+%2B+3x+=+8
---------------
This is 2 equations with 2 unknowns, so it's solvable
Subtract (1) from (2)
(2) y+%2B+3x+=+8
(1) -y+-+x+=+-6
2x+=+2
x+=+1
The cost/topping is $1
and, from (1),
(1) y+%2B+x+=+6
y+=+6+-+1
y+=+5
The charge for a plain pizza is $5
