Question 397900: A plane flying at 300 mph has a 3 hr head start on a "chase plane" which has the speed of 800 mph. How far from the airport will the chase plane overtake the first plane?
I got 1.8 mi but I have no idea if this is correct.
I set up the equation as such:
900+300(x)=800(x) Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! It's 900 miles ahead (300*3)
The chase plane gains on him at 500 mph (800 - 300)
900 mi/500 mph = 1.8 hours
1.8 hr * 800 mph = 1440 miles from the airport
---------
You got the right number, but it's hours.
You can catch a lot of errors and make things clear if you include the units in your calculations.
