Question 1097014: A cereal is sold in boxes of different sizes. Suppose that the price of a box is a linear function of the weight. The prices for boxes of three sizes are shown in the table. Find the equation and then answer to the following question using the equation found. What would be the price for a 21-ounce box of cereal?
14 ounces is $2.59
18 ounces is $2.99
26 ounces is $3.79
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Difference in price/difference in weight is the slope
y is a function of x
cost is a function of weight
Therefore, the slope is (2.99-2.59)/(18-14)
=0.40/4=$0.10/1 ounce.
This holds for 18-26 ounces, too
The price increase 10 cents an ounce
Therefore, 21 ounces is $2.99+$0.30=$3.29
It would increase $0.50 for 5 more ounces, and that price checks the $3.79 given.
