Question 1049560: CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN where the extra $1 came from....
I went to the shoe store and the shoes i wanted cost $50 so i went home and got $25 from my mom and $25 from my sister...when i go back to the store the shoes came out to $45 instead so now i got $5 left from that $5 my friend ask to hold $3 so now i got $2 so i go home n give my mom $1 and my sister $1 so now i owe them $24 each..ok so if i add the $24+$24 i owe my mom and sister + the $3 i let my friend hold how i got $51 if i started off wit $50
Answer by MathLover1(20850) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The error comes about by being in how you account for where the $ in change went after the purchase of the shoes,
first you used the $ in change to give to your friend $ and from remaining $ you erroneously subtract $ from what you owe each of your mom and sister ($ - $ = $) (you're counting backwards!) and then you to that total debt balance of $ ($ you owe mom + $ you owe sister) and the ${{3}}} which you gave to your friend then arrive at the false sum of $, when you should have correctly and added the $ change back onto the $-cost of the shoes so that the correct total balance of $ would then be realized and accounted for as follows:
BEFORE THE PURCHASE OF THE SHOES
Amount borrowed from mom -- $
Amount borrowed from sister -- $
Total borrowed -- $
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THE SHOES
Cost of shoes -- $
plus $ change:
three dollars to friend -- $
One dollar to mom -- $
One dollar to sister -- $
Total $
or simply, you add $
