Hope is in charge of ticket sales for the school play. The price of admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.
Hope recorded that 75 tickets had been sold. After counting the profits from the money box, she found that
the total amount collected was $225. How many tickets were sold?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From the condition, you have this system of two equations in two unknowns

 a +  s = 75,    (1)
5a + 2s = 225    (2)

Multiply (1) by 2 (both sides) and then distract from (2). You will get a single equation for the unknown a:

5a - 2a = 225 - 150,   or

3a = 750,

a = 75%2F3 = 25.

Now from (1) s = 75 - a = 75 - 25 = 50.

Answer. 25 adult tickets and 50 student tickets.
