Question 6600: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Solve the equation.
3/(2x-5) + 2/(2x+5) = (10x + 5)/(4x^2 - 25)"
When you work out the left side of the equation (i.e. the addition) you get exactly the same thing as on the right side, so it is just like saying 1 = 1 is it not? I don't understand why the answer is all real numbers except +-5/2. Can you help me please?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
-Mike

Question 6611: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"A box with an open top is to be constructed by cutting 3-in squares from the corners of a rectangular sheet of tin, whose length is twice its width, and then folding up the sides. What size sheet of tin will produce a box having a volume of 60 cubic inches?"
I did the following:
1) Volume = l * w * h
l = 2w
h = 3
2) 60 = 2w * w * 3
3) 6w^2 = 60
4) w^2 = 10
5) w =
But that is not correct. The right answer for the width is 8 inches. What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6520: Dear Sir/Madam,
in finding the vertex of a parabola, I have been taught the following:
Rewrite the formula in point slope form, which means y - a = m(x - b), where the vertex is (b,a).
I tried to use this procedure for the following parabola: x^2 - 4x - 2y - 4 = 0. Thus, I rewrote it as follows: 2(y + 2) = x(x - 4), which would in theory mean that the vertex is (4,-2). However, this is not the case. Instead, the vertex is (2,-4). What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6608: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Simplify the expression.
(3x + 1)^6 * (1/2) * (2x - 5)^(-1/2) * (2) + (2x - 5)^(1/2) * (6) * (3x + 1)^5 * (3)."
I did the following:
[(3x + 1)^6 / (2x - 5)^(1/2)] + 18(2x - 5)^(1/2) * (3x + 1)^5
but now I don't know how to proceed. I tried setting (2x - 5)^(1/2) as a common denominator and actually doing the addition, but I couldn't get it to work. Can you help me out please?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6647: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Find the equation of the line that is tangent to the circle x^2 + y^2 = 25 at the point P(-3,4)."
I did the following:
1)
2)
3) f'(x) =
4) f'(-3) =
5)
6) -3(x + 3) = 4(y - 4)
7) -3x - 9 = 4y - 16
8) 4y = -3x + 7
9) which should be the equation of the tangent.
Instead however, is the equation of the tangent. Why?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6644: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Find the center and radius of the circle with the following equation:
x^2 + y^2 - 10x + 8y -40 = 0"
I have absolutely no idea how to approach this question. I want to use the x^2 + y^2 = r^2 formula, but I don't how to integrate that into this problem. Can you please help me?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6650: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"A tiger named Montecore has to leap 6 meters horizontally to jump over a small ravine. Imagine the tiger begins his jump at the origin (0,0). The tiger reaches a maximum height of 2 meters above the line that joins the points where he jumps and lands (i.e. the x-axis). Assume Montecore's leap follows a parabolic path. Find the equation of the tiger."
I would assume that the answer is : . 'a' will be negative, as the parabola is reflected across the x-axis, but how do you figure out the value of 'a'?
Thanks in advance.

Question 6664: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Let parallelogram ABCD have vertices on the xy-coordinate plane A(0,0), B(b,0), and C(a,c). Find an equation for the distances between the points B and D. Assume a, b, and c are all positive and assume a > b."
I visualize this parallelogram (well, at least partially) and have drawn myself a sketch of it, but how would you go about solving this question because I can't seem to figure it out?!
Thanks in advance.

Question 6649: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"A certain state taxes the first $30,000 of an individual's income at a rate of 2%, and all income over $30,000 is taxed at 5%. Find a piecewise-defined function T that gives the total tax on an income of x dollars."
I asssumed that T(x) = 0.02x if 0<=x<=30000, 0.05x if x > 30000. However, the answer is T(x) = 0.02x if 0<=x<=30000, 0.05x-900 if x > 30000. Why do you have to subtract 2% of 30000 (i.e. 900) when the income is greater than 30000? If the income is greater than 30000, I thought it simply taxed at a rate of 5%?!
Thanks in advance.

Question 6911: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am confronted with the following problem:
"Find an exponential function of the form f(x) = a * e^(b/x) + c that has y-intercept (0,5), a horizontal asymptote y = 3, and whose graph passes through the point (4,10)."
I don't know how to use the fact that the function has a horizontal asymptote at y = 3 in order to solve this question. I know that the horizontal asymptote means that the function will never be equal to 3, but other than that, I don't know how to use it. Can you help me?
Thanks in advance.

Question 8005: I know how to solve systems of linear equations using the substitution method, the addition/subtraction method, the graphing method, and the multiplication with addition/subtraction method. But I have recently come across a problem that asks me to solve the system 5x - 4y =2 and -2x + y = 1 by using the linear combination method. I would really appreciate it if someone could show me how to use this method.
Thanks!
